Carter gets to Play at Wembley!

As a club made up of volunteers, who lend their time to learn valuable life skills learning football and making friends for life, they plant the seed for children to strive at what they do and pursue a career where the pinnacle of anyone’s football journey would be to play on the hallowed turf at Wembley.

It just so happens that our club secretary, James Carter has the opportunity to represent our club as part of a special recognition award for his services and contribution to grassroots football. He will join a select few of other volunteers who have been selected by their County FA’s, and will take his place on the pitch this evening, under the lights for a once-in-a-lifetime match opportunity.

In the last 6 years with the club, he has:

Brought the club ‘back home’ to the village of Linthwaite.
Fought Planning Permission Battles.
Secured us further Facilities: Thornton & Ross / Slaithwaite Two Gates to provide football for all of our teams.
⁠Gained us the Highest Accreditation with the FA (3 Star/Thriving Community Club)
Tripled the size of the club.
⁠Being nominated for Three FA Awards over the last Two Years, coming away with two ‘Highly Recommended’ and the ‘Club of the Year’
Being instrumental in winning ‘Club Of The Year’.
Introduced and sustainably grown Disability football at our club and helped and assisted other clubs to set up their own disability sections.

Lastly, and not at least - his community work as Colne Valley Running Santa for the last 6 years, raising money and the various food collections for our local food banks; Colne Valley Help & Storth House CIC, helping to provide for those who really need it.

People like him don’t come along very often and we’re so lucky to have him so involved within our club. I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again, he’s an absolute diamond and will do anything for anybody.

Silent Support Weekend

This weekend, we proudly hosted Silent Support Weekend.

We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to all parents and spectators for honouring the initiative by staying quiet on the sidelines and showing your encouragement through applause.

It was truly wonderful to watch our players enjoy the game free from sideline pressure.

The calm atmosphere allowed the children’s voices, teamwork, and joy to shine through. Seeing them communicate, express themselves, and simply play the sport they love was both peaceful and inspiring.

Last night, at the West Riding FA 2025 Grassroots Football Awards, we were humbled and proud to come away with:

These awards mean the world to us. They represent everything we stand for — a club built on the belief that football should always be Safe, Fun & Inclusive.

Just five seasons ago, we had no home. Our teams hadn’t played in the village for over a decade, despite our club’s proud 41-year history. We had to rebuild from the ground up — and we did.

In those five seasons, we’ve:

Fought and won planning battles to bring football home.
Tripled in size — safely, fairly, and sustainably.
Built a real ethos based on honesty, inclusivity, and heart.
Strengthened our ties with the local community.
Overcome countless barriers and challenges — long before a ball was even kicked.

We are currently looking for a Lead Coach & Session Helpers to deliver our weekly Wildcats Session. The Sessions are held on Wednesday Evenings between 18:00-19:00 for girls aged between 6-11 years old. You could be part of building girls' confidence, enabling them to make new social circles & growing girls football in the Colne Valley Area.

What will our club do for you?

Fund & Provide you with a DBS Check.
Fund FA Introduction to Safeguarding Training.
Fund FA Introduction to First-Aid Training.
Fund FA Introduction to Football Training.
Support you where & when required.
Give you freedom to manage your own sessions.
Help you to be influential for local girls.

Lead Coaches would need to be 18+, however, we are happy to have helpers under the age of 18, assisting them with experience for their future work & development.

Our Open Age Team is Back!

Our club returned back to Linthwaite over 4 years ago and in this time we have worked frantically to rebuild our club organically, ensuring whatever we do is with our players in mind. This has seen our club triple in size, with additional sections added, such as the Girls teams & Pan-Disability Football.

This evening we hit another Huge Milestone, seeing us hold our first Open Age training session in over 7 years, with over 20 attendees.

Former junior player, Eesa Ahmed has remained with the club as an assistant coach & next season he will be stepping up to manage our new open age team in The Calder Valley Sunday League.

This addition to our current offering, will see the club have a pathway from Tots all the way up to Adult Football.

Respect the Referees

We all know there is a significant shortage for referees nationwide, meaning games are delayed or rescheduled on a weekly basis as we have seen over social media. In my role as fixture & referee Secretary (amongst other roles), I have a great team of people who are willing to cross that line to get games on every week. It has been brought to my attention that in recent weeks, these people have become the target of derogatory comments for their decisions made during a game & I need this to stop. Without these people stepping up to take the games, your children would not be playing football. The comments made this weekend, were aimed towards a child (under 18) again.

Think about it this way - who would want to go into a job where you're insulted, abused & in some cases, assaulted? I'm sure you wouldn't put up with this, so why should they? Referees makes mistakes & don't always get the decisions, neither do the professionals with VAR. You wouldn't aim abusive comments towards your child or another player if they made a mistake. Every time a referee officiates, they are learning, just like all our coaches and players are. Shouting at them won't change the referees' decision. It will just make them think twice about stepping on a pitch again, which in the last few years, has occurred on more than one occasion.

Leagues across the country are crying out for referees, so just think; you’re the role models to these players, they always look up to adults so why not teach them respect & how to behave? These skills they learn won't just stay on the pitch, they will also take them into their futures.

Should I hear of this occurring again in the future, I will be suggesting to the club that these people (and children) are removed from the club. Your coaches are all volunteers, they give up their time for free, to provide safe environments for your children to learn. Please think again before you speak in future.

We as a club are continuously striving to be the best in the area, working hard behind the scenes to be at the forefront of everything we do. We need your support to help us.

Throughout January, I have completed our Clubs Accreditation with The West Riding FA for the 2024/25 Season.

I’m extremely proud to announce that for the 3rd Season in a row, we have achieved The FA ’s Highest Accreditation!

3 Star.

Out of 96 Grassroots Football Clubs in the whole of Kirklees, we are the ONLY Club which holds the status of a 3 Star FA Accredited Club!

Even though we are a club ran fully by volunteers, we strive to do what’s best for our Coaches, Players, Football Family & the Community.

We set the bar high to ensure Football is available for Everyone in a Safe, Caring & Welcoming environment.

Our Girls Pathway

Our Girls Pathway is flourishing & growing season after season.

A couple of years ago we only had 1 team, now we have 5 teams full of girls just enjoying football.

As a club, we try our best to support our players & ensure they enjoy their time at the club. Ex-player, Megan Egdall, now at Golcar United Ladies FC & Bradford City AFC , spent many years in a mixed team at Linthwaite, supported each week on the sidelines from her father Sean Egdall .

Sean has supported grassroots clubs throughout the Colne Valley area for many years, via his business, ‘ On The Move Removals ’. Over the years, he has seen Girls sat on the sidelines in cold & wet conditions without anywhere to sit comfortably.

He wanted to change things and ensure the Girls are comfortable while they are on the sidelines. With this, he has supported all 5 of our Girls Teams by providing them with comfy benches, ensuring they have a safe dry area to set when on the sidelines.

Thank you very much for your continued support Sean, both the girls & the club, really appreciate the huge difference you have made to their match day experience.

Meet Joshua!

Joshua started his football journey with Linthwaite Football Club just under 12 months ago, via our Pan-Disability Friday Night Fun Football Comet Sessions!

Since this time, Joshua has broken boundaries & surprised his Parents & Coaches. He doesn’t only attending our Comet Pan-Disability Sessions,he is now also playing within mainstream grassroots football in one of our U11 Teams.

Joshua has had his ups and downs since joining our U11’s, due to his medical condition. Whenever he has flare ups, he still comes and watches his teammates, cheering them on from the sidelines.

2 weeks ago, he was on crutches unable to play.

However yesterday, 2 weeks later he was the team’s Player Of The Match!

His resilience and determination to play is more than any player we’ve seen.

Well done Joshua.

Huddersfield Town Foundation training session

This morning 25 Players from our The FA Comets Pan-Disability Sessions, Fierce & Fearless Wildcat Girls Sessions & U7, U8, U9, U11 & U12 Teams enjoyed a training session with the Huddersfield Town Foundation .

They are now all seated watching Huddersfield Town vs Barnsley Football Club at the John Smiths Stadium.

We would like to say a Huge Thank You to The Huddersfield Town Foundation for providing our players with this amazing opportunity. Additionally we would also like to Thank Abbie & Caitlin for their fantastic training session.

We look forward to doing it again.

As Volunteers we focus on ensuring our Players are happy and enjoy their time on the grass.

However, we also have to ensure off the pitch we don’t disturb the local community.

Since adding Slaithwaite Junior & Infant School to our Facilities this season. It was brought to our attention that there were parking issues, when we were using these facilities.

With this, moving forward whenever we use the site we will ensure to situate No Parking Signs & No Parking Cones outside the school grounds. Hopefully local residents will see we are trying our best as volunteers to ensure everyone is happy, not just our players.

If you are attending these facilities, please ensure you don’t park within the signed & coned area.

We would like to say a Huge Thank You to Paul Bray from Doocey Traffic for donating the No Parking Cones, & Steve Brown Construction for transporting our goals up to the site.

Over the last 4 years we have really focused on building connections within the local community, ensuring we support it & give back when we can.

With this, when our future looked uncertain towards the end of last season we were supported by some extremely kind & helpful people/organisations.

Due to the help & kindness we received we will now be playing across 3 locations:

Colne Valley Sports Hall

Slaithwaite Junior & Infant School (Two Gates)

Linthwaite Playing Fields (By Thornton & Ross)

A lot of hours, work & dedication has been put in to enable & we couldn’t do it without the support of others.

A 9v9 pitch has been created at Slaithwaite Junior & Infant School has been created & we have access to toilets at the site.

We have worked hard down at Linthwaite Cricket Club to ensure we have better access to the pitches, with access to park to help local residents & reduce complaints, we will also have access to changing rooms & toilets for our 11v11 teams.

Grass Pitch Access Update

At the beginning of this week (Monday 24th June) we received the news that we could no longer use the Grass Pitches at Colne Valley High School. This was further confirmed in writing on Wednesday 26th June.

As you can imagine after all the effort we had put in as a club, we were deeply upset by this news & we actually held discussions about potentially disbanding the club.

After years of effort and multiple occasions where we have hit a brick wall, fighting planning permission applications, the constant wet weather, lots of things going against us. We have always given our all and over come what has felt like the impossible.

This is because we really do care for the community, our coaches, players & families.

The main reason why we have been successful within these battles, is because we try to do things correctly, work with all the relevant parties in an open manor, be true to our word and be there for the community.

When we brought the club back to Linthwaite we have created all the relevant partnership & built strong & honest relationships with all of the stakeholders we deal with. Because of this, after multiple hours, hundreds of phone calls/emails & not much sleep we have managed to secure the continual use of the pitches at Colne Valley High School in the short term.

We will now work behind the scenes with all the relevant partners to focus on the long term situation, in agreement to ensure we all try our very best to ensure Linthwaite Football Club continues to support the local community with sport.

It’s been an extremely emotional & tiring week and this short term agreement couldn’t have taken place, if it wasn’t for all the positive effects we have on children & adults by providing access to football, making friends & benefiting both from the physical & mental aspects of exercise.

Again, I would like to Thank all of the relevant stakeholders involved within Colne Valley High Schools' Structure & of course the community, who shared their support when we made our announcement.

Training & Matches will resume at Colne Valley High School as of today, Friday 28th June 2024.

CLUB STATEMENT

Grass Pitch Access Announcement.

Wednesday 26 ^th July 2024

On the 21 ^st of July 2021, Linthwaite Football Club returned back to Linthwaite after being away from the area for over a decade. This was down to the huge help & assistance from Colne Valley High School, Spie, Mirfield Free Grammar & our very own Coaches/Club Members.

Throughout the summer of 2021, we came together as a community, digging kilometres of drainage systems and created 3 new football pitches on the fields at Colne Valley High School. This was a huge turning point for our club, seeing us build foundations & help children within the community. Since our time back in Linthwaite, we have donated thousands of unpaid hours, on top of our day jobs & invested over £15,000 on new goals, equipment and pitch maintenance to ensure the players have enjoyed football within a safe environment.

On the 15 ^th June 2024, we held our 2023/24 Presentation, seeing the club finish the season with 363 Children/Adults, playing across 22 teams.

Unfortunately, on Monday 24 ^th June 2024 we have received notice that we are no longer able to use the Grass Pitches at Colne Valley High School. This is totally out of our control and with this we are now searching for alternative solutions within the local area.

We still have access to the Artificial Grass Pitch at Colne Valley Sports Hall & we are also looking to renew our booking for the 2024/25 season with Kirklees for the use of the two pitches by Thornton & Ross. However, in the meantime we are looking for an area within the local community to where we can hold our teams’ training sessions on the evening throughout the week.

So far this week we have had to cancel training for 21 teams sessions, seeing 330+ children without football, missing out on social interaction & the mental and physical benefits of exercise.

As I have mentioned we are still working on a solution & we would like to thank Colne Valley High School for all of their help within this current stressful time. However, this situation is out of both of our hands.

We now really need to fall back on the support of the community to ensure we can find a suitable & safe environment for over 330+ children to enjoy football.

We are willing to look at every option as we want our club to continue into its 40 ^th season and not have to disband, leaving 363 Children & Adults without a football club. Girls Coach Required for 2024-25 Season

Following the success of establishing our 2 current u11 girls' teams, demand has outstripped our current capacity.

To give all 45 girls (who are already in our teams or on the waiting list) the opportunity to play and become part of the club, we’re looking to establish a new u11 girls team (Yr. 6 in September) for the upcoming 2024-25 season.

This will allow our current players who are playing up a year to develop within their correct age group and allow new girls to join our two existing teams.

The players are there ready and waiting, all we need is a coach.

Our Pan-Disability Sessions

We’re extremely proud, as what started as an idea, has grown into delivering our propose to ensure Football Is Available For Everyone.

Since starting our Fun Friday Pan-Disability Football Sessions back in November, we have over 28 regular attendees (both children & adults) from the Colne Valley area, far parts of Huddersfield, Bradford & Halifax, enjoying football.

Throughout this time, we’ve learnt a lot & we continue to do so. We also appreciated the need to keep everyone fully informed.

With this we have created an information pack to provide you with an insight of what to expect from our fun filled sessions. We apologise, this may be a little late, but it will hopefully help us & others attending in the future.

Silent Weekend

This weekend (2nd - 3rd March 2024) is National Silent Support Weekend.

What is Silent Support?

Silent Support means players and coaches can focus on the game, not the noise.

By asking spectators on the side lines to show support through applause only, we’re creating a space where players have the freedom to own their game.

The game is different when you’re in it.

Your players are here for the applause, not the shouting.

Action not distraction.

Silent Support gives them the opportunity to trust their instincts and learn for themselves.

For coaches.

Coaches deserve a safe space to champion their players away from interruptions.

This weekend gives coaches the chance to see their players work in a completely different way.

We are once again 3 Star Accredited with the FA

We’ve worked extensively & extremely hard to secure our 3 Star Accredited.

With over 300+ Players, 23 Teams including Mixed, Girls & Pan-disability, we really have ensured we are inclusive in everything we do.

We are one of a small amount of clubs which have achieved the highest FA accreditation.

This will enable us to ensure our club is inclusive, welcoming and further support our local community with fun disabilities football.

We attended Disability Training for clubs at WRCFA

Last night our club committee members, Hughie Friell & James Carter attended Disability Training For Clubs at West Riding FA.

It was great for them to share their stories on the clubs current Pan-Disability sessions & also learn how we can further improve our club to ensure Everyone Is Welcome. We were the only club who travelled from Huddersfield to Leeds attending the event. With this, we are even more dedicated to push our club forward, ensuring we support our community.

We are launching our Girls Development Sessions

Linthwaite Football Club are proud to announce the launch of a New Exciting Girls Football Development Session for Ages 6 - 11 years old.

These sessions will begin on Wednesday 21st February 2024 between 18:00 - 19:00 and will be held at Colne Valley High School (HD7 5SP)

Our sessions will focus on building self-confidence, resilience, courage, and friendships through the development of football skills. These will be open to absolute beginners and girls who love playing sport.

Our mission at Linthwaite Football Club is through the power and universal language of football, is to help shape the lives of young girls to become self-confident and future leaders in our community.

Sean Wetherhead joins Linthwaite FC

As we continue to grow & strengthen our foundations within Linthwaite & the Colne Valley area, we are delighted to welcome Shaun Weatherhead to Linthwaite Football Club. Shaun joins Linthwaite Football Club as Head of Girls Development.

Shaun has a huge wealth of knowledge in Grassroots Football and his knowledge will really benefit the club in delivering our vision of expanding this side of football in Colne Valley. While he was the Chairman at Westend Junior Football Club he successfully launched the girls side of their football club, growing it to the largest girls section in Huddersfield.

This is our aim for the future of Linthwaite Football Club, we will be announcing further information over the next few days so please keep your eyes peeled.

Come and join Linthwaite Football Clubs Pan Disabilities Session, EVERY FRIDAY EVENING between 18:00-19:00 at Colne Valley Sports Hall. (Children 7-16), (Adults 17-18+)

Our Club main focuses

As a club our main focuses are to:

Support our community
Ensure football is available for everyone
Ensure our players, coaches & parents enjoy themselves.
Ensure we have a safe environment for our players, coaches & spectators.
Ensure we are approachable & transparent

We also want players to come through at U7 & stay with us until their adult life.

Additionally, this season The West Riding FA has seen a 400% increase in discipline incidents with 60% of incidents committed by adults. We want to act before we encounter any incidents. Whilst also building an even stronger community within our club. With this, we have decided to create a Parent Sub Committee to work closely with our Club Committee & Club Members. Our target is to hopefully have a minimum of 1 Parent per team within the Parent Sub Committee.
